Remedial massage treatment is carried out using recognised testing protocols, such as assessing a client’s posture, muscular imbalances and mobility. Often offered in clinics, gyms, sports clubs and privately, remedial massage therapists are able to apply treatments that will improve movement, manage pain, enhance recovery from exercise and assist rehabilitation.

A remedial massage therapist is specifically trained to systematically assess and treat the muscles, connective tissues, tendons and ligaments of the body.

What are some career options available for remedial massage therapists?

The majority of remedial massage therapists work as practitioners in a variety of settings including private practice, retreats, spas, and even cruise ships. Graduates often choose to become their own boss by practising as sole traders, this can be as part of private treatment space, a multidisciplinary practice or establishing a partnership with other healthcare professionals. Experienced remedial massage therapists can gain employment as trainers with RTOs around Australia through completing VET Trainer qualifications.

The sporting industry is a particularly specialised area for remedial massage therapists. Many therapists enter either part-time or full-time careers as support members for sporting teams and athletes. These types of roles are very flexible, a therapist is often employed to work with athletes and sportspeople in a full-time capacity in the preparation for sporting events and the recovery from them or on a casual basis during particular sporting seasons. 

Most work arrangements give the therapist the ability to direct their own workflow while also having the opportunity to travel and work both within Australia and around the world.
 
What about further studies for remedial massage therapists?

Graduates of Endeavour’s HLT52015 Diploma of Remedial Massage have the opportunity to pathway into Endeavour’s Bachelor of Health Science (Chinese Medicine) degree. Completion of this Diploma is equivalent to you having completed almost a third of a Bachelor of Health Science (Myotherapy). 
Further study options could also include fitness instructor, personal trainer, nutritionist, and naturopath.

The number of massage therapists in the industry has grown strongly over the past five years and is expected to see further steady growth over the next five years from 19,900 in 2018 to 23,900 by 2023. It is estimated that there will be approximately 15,000 job openings within and related to the industry over the next five years  ( Source Job Outlook).
