In her home country of Brazil, Paula Aguina studied architecture and worked as an architect for several years. Although Paula realised it wasn’t a career for her, she didn’t consider natural health an option until she was in Australia.
“In Brazil, I knew something had to change,” Paula said. “So, I left the country and went first to the United States. Then I moved to Australia, where I knew I could work and study.”
Paula said it took her a while to decide what to do in Australia.
“It was a big adjustment living here – not just because of the language, but also because it’s a different culture,” she said. “I started working in the English language industry, but when Covid-19 arrived, my hours got cut, and I saw it as my time to follow my passion for nutrition.
“Growing up, I wasn’t the healthiest,” Paula said. “I had acne and gastrointestinal issues, so I saw a nutritionist. She showed me that by changing what I ate, my health improved. And once I discovered how powerful nutritional medicine could be, I wanted to understand more about it.”
Paula started a short course in nutrition, which made her realise that she wanted to study it in-depth.
“I had been following Endeavour’s socials for some time, and I liked the holistic perspective of the College, so I looked into studying nutrition,” Paula said. “The fact that I could do the first year online was a game-changer. It gave me the flexibility to work and study.”
“As English is my second language, I found certain science subjects, like pathology, challenging because of the technical terms used in them. Reading research articles, for instance, was hard. But Endeavour provides excellent support, including online.”
While Paula started her studies in Brisbane, in her second year, she moved to Sydney to expand her job prospects. She landed a short job as a nutrition coach with a tech-based nutrition company, Equalution.
“When I started studying, I was interested in nutrition but didn’t know what I would do when I finished my degree. I had no idea that roles like this existed,” Paula said. “The experience opened my eyes to the many possible career paths you have with nutrition. Working at Equalution was an amazing opportunity to be in the industry, learning on the go and furthering my nutrition knowledge.”
“I think it’s good advice to all students to seek out companies you’d like to work for in the future and approach them while you’re still studying.”
Now an Australian citizen, Paula has her heart set on working as a nutrition coach again and travelling around as much of her adopted country as possible.
