Why becoming a Remedial Massage therapist was the best mistake Kat Murray ever made.
Kat Murray will tell you that enrolling in the Diploma of Remedial Massage (HLT5205) course at Endeavour College was the best mistake she ever made. Now a successful business owner with what she describes as ‘an amazing career’, Kat didn’t initially intend to become a massage therapist but fell into it by accident.
“I wrote the wrong thing down on my QTAC form when I was in high school and when I got my offer from Endeavour I thought, ‘well, I guess I’ll be giving this a try!’ In the process of studying I realised how much I enjoyed the industry and how much it suited my lifestyle,” Kat said.
At the time Kat was an elite rower and trying out for the Australian Rowing Team and working as a remedial massage therapist gave her the flexibility to pursue her dreams.
“Massage was perfect for me because of the flexible hours, not to mention the great income I made for the number of hours I could commit to work!” she said.
Following her heart (and gut instincts) to combine her passion with the knowledge and experience she gained through her studies at Endeavour, Kat’s career has gone from strength to strength.
In 2013, she opened Just Knead It – a Brisbane-based massage business that specialises in improving sports performance and injury prevention through remedial massage and myotherapy. Since then she has travelled internationally working with elite athletes and sporting teams including the Australian Cycling Team, Australian Rowing Team and Australian Dolphins swim team. She’s also toured through Europe as part of the Australian Institute of Sport’s Sports-Med team and attended the Commonwealth Games with the Australian Dolphins.
“I can’t explain how incredible it was to be part of an event like the Commonwealth Games. I will never forget walking in the opening ceremony or being on the pool deck with thousands of Aussies screaming around us as the team won medal after medal at the Games,” Kat said.
Now, between travelling internationally with the Australian swim team in the lead-up to the 2020 Olympic Games, Kat is focussed on continuing to build Just Knead It by adding additional health modalities under one roof.
“I’ve created a business that genuinely helps people achieve their health and fitness goals by taking a proactive approach to their health. My goal is to become the household name for Soft Tissue Therapy in Australia,” she said.
Not a bad outcome for a ‘mistake’!
“In hindsight, that mistake may have been destiny . This is the perfect career for me because it combines my love of sport, health and helping people,” Kat said.
